The citrus olfactory family gathers hesperide scents, made of citrus fruits. Discover the origins of this name coming from the Greek mythology, and the signature of these fresh and dynamic fragrances. Please, let us refresh your summer…

The Hesperides live in a divine garden on an island in the Aegean Sea. Daughters of Atlas and Hesperis, the three nymphs watch over the tree of Golden Apples, giving immortality to anyone who tastes them… The legend does not say exactly which fruits were those Golden Apples. But many interpretations suggest they were oranges. Unknown in Greece, the color and the reflections of the sun on their skin made them look like apples! So when the Greeks discovered the first citrus fruits imported from Asia in the third century BC, they named them Hesperide. The citrus olfactory family is coming…

Perfumery discovers citrus after an Asian expedition of Alexander the Great, who brought in Greece the citron plants. The Arabs grow bitter orange from the tenth century in the Mediterranean, and bergamot appears in the fifteenth century in Calabria. The citrus olfactory family gathers hesperide fragrances made of orange, lemon, mandarin, bergamot or grapefruit for instance. Their fresh, light and tonic notes come from the essential oils obtained by expression of the fruit’s peel. Because of their volatility, citrus have been dedicated to Colognes for many years. But they are now more and more commonly associated with floral middle notes and cyprus (chypre), woody or musky base notes to sublimate the top notes of eaux de toilette and eaux de parfum!

In our Carrement Belle Collection, the citrus olfactory family is celebrated with our fragrance “enkor“. Created as a Cologne in 1991, we re-worked its formula some years later to create a fresh and invigorating eau de parfum. Citrus (lemon, mandarin, grapefruit) are here associated to a light floral heart, and woody cyprus base notes. A bright perfume to make the summer last over and over again…
