Mahogany is a term that designates a group of tropical trees that are part of the Meliaceae family. Depending on the variety and species, these trees can have a red, brown or even pink color. This wood is widely used in marquetry and cabinetmaking for its fineness and strength. For perfumery, we use the essence of mahogany, obtained through the distillation of its bark with steam. This process delivers an essential oil with aromatic and earthy nuances. We can also detect exotic, floral and green notes. If woody essences are commonplace in perfumery, the mahogany note is still not widespread in compositions. Noses integrate it into oriental and floral fragrances to give them an extra touch of warmth and intensity.
